Emmys TV Alternatives: What to Watch If You Don't Want to Watch the Ceremony

Avoid entertainment-industry glad-handing with offerings including a Manson cult special, Megan Amram's spoof of the Emmy nomination process and reruns of 'Mean Streets' and 'The Dark Knight Rises.'

Perhaps you're not excited to see Colin Jost and Michael Che bring their Saturday Night Live shtick to the Emmys stage. Or your favorite show didn't get nominated. Or, like many, awards shows just aren't your thing. Whatever the reason, if you're not watching the 2018 Emmys ceremony this year, there are plenty of alternatives to the NBC program.

Over on Fox, for instance, the two-hour special Inside the Manson Cult: The Lost Tapes will offer new interviews with players in the Manson killings and investigation, and footage from the Manson family compound at Spahn Ranch, L.A. Meanwhile, IFC is planning Emmy-adjacent programming with An Emmy for Megan, the five-part comedy online web series created by Megan Amram that spoofed Emmy award requirements as it documented Amram trying to meet all of them. Reality-television lovers will want to look to ABC, Bravo, HGTV and more for offerings such as Castaways, The Real Housewives of Orange County and Love It or List It.

It remains to be seen whether counterprogramming will help perpetuate the Emmys' declining ratings streak. The past three Emmy ceremonies averaged 11.5 million viewers, which makes the TV Academy's bash the least-watched major TV awards show.
