NEW YORK -- NBC News said Tuesday that it has hired former Newsweek editor Mark Whitaker as senior vp.

Whitaker will be second-in-command in the news division and report to NBC News president Steve Capus. He'll take over some of the jobs that had been done by Alex Wallace before she became executive producer of "NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams" in March. Wallace remains a vp.

Whitaker will be responsible for day-to-day newsgathering as well as editorial specials and developing online content for MSNBC.com. He starts May 21.

Whitaker was vp and editor-in-chief of new ventures at Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive and was editor of Newsweek from 1998-2006. He was a reporter, writer and editor for 20 years before that. The Harvard graduate studied at Oxford University's Balliol College.
