Whitaker nabs Cinema for Peace prize

COLOGNE, Germany -- Forest Whitaker has been named best actor at this year's Cinema for Peace awards for his performance as Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in Kevin Macdonald's "The Last King of Scotland."

Announcing its decision Monday, the Cinema for Peace jury called Whitaker's performance "an overwhelming portrayal of an unbelievable human monster."

Whitaker has been showered with praise for the role, which won him the Golden Globe for best actor and is considered a front-runner for the Oscars.

The Cinema for Peace award will be presented at a red-carpet gala in Berlin Feb. 12.
