Emmys Polls: Who Should Win in the Comedy Categories?
'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,' 'Veep,' and 'Russian Doll' are among the shows battling for best comedy series, while their stars are up for acting awards.
The comedy categories at the 2019 Emmys will have steep competition, with serious contenders vying for best actress and actor in a comedy series as well as outstanding comedy series.
The nominees in the three slots include various previous winners and nominees, as well as some newcomers.
For outstanding comedy series, Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is looking to reclaim its title again after coming off a victory last year. Three-time winner Veep will also be hoping to secure the award, considering its winning streak was broken last Emmy season when the HBO show wasn't eligible because of a hiatus while star Julia Louis-Dreyfus sought treatment for breast cancer. New to the category are Amazon's Fleabag, NBC's The Good Place and Netflix’s Russian Doll along with Schitt’s Creek, with the Pop series' two leads up for best actor and actress in a comedy series.
HBO’s black comedy Barry was nominated this year— its second year in a row— for best comedy series as well. The show is no stranger to racking up awards, with Bill Hader winning best actor in a comedy series honors and Henry Winkler tapped as best supporting actor in a comedy last year.
Hader, who plays a hitman caught up in a midlife crisis and interested in becoming an actor, is also up for best actor in a comedy series again this year.
Other actors up for the award are Don Cheadle for Showtime's Black Monday; Michael Douglas for Netflix's The Kominsky Method; Ted Danson for The Good Place; Eugene Levy for Schitt's Creek and Anthony Anderson for ABC's Black-ish.
This is Cheadle’s first nomination for Black Monday, but the actor received four noms in the category for his previous Showtime show House of Lies. Another strong competitor is Danson, who has not won an Emmy since he last received the award for lead actor in a comedy series in 1993 for Cheers. This is also Anderson’s fifth Emmy nomination in a row for Black-ish.
On the actress side of things, Rachel Brosnahan is hoping to reclaim her crown as best actress in a comedy series for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. She will be going up against Phoebe Waller-Bridge for her work on Fleabag; Netflix's Dead to Me star Christina Applegate; Russian Doll’s Natasha Lyonne; Catherine O’Hara, who plays Moira Rose on Schitt’s Creek; and veteran Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who won the award six years in a row for Veep.
