Wild Bunch taking 'Black Death' to Germany

French indie distributor branching into new territory

More Cannes coverage

CANNES -- French indie giant Wild Bunch is kicking off its German distribution operation with the Middle Ages mystery thriller "Black Death" starring Sean Bean.

Wild Bunch will bow the Christopher Smith-directed feature in Germany next year.

The 14th century drama, which also stars Carice van Houten and Eddie Radmayne, is shooting in the eastern German state of Sachsen Anhalt. Germany's Egoli Tossell and Britain's Ecosse Films are producing and Hanway Films is selling the title in Cannes.

Wild Bunch launched its German distribution outfit under the radar a few weeks ago, snatching up ex-Telepool executive Marc Gabizon to run the operation out of Munich. Booking and billing for the German releases will be handled by Central Film, the Berlin-based 50-50 joint venture between Wild Bunch and Senator Film.

Wild Bunch is expected to announce a full slate of titles for Germany soon.
