Will Ferrell, Molly Shannon Make 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' Appearance as Local-TV Rose Parade Hosts
The 'SNL' alums will reunite to emcee live coverage of the parade on Amazon Prime Video, in character as Cord Hosenbeck and Tish Cattigan.
Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon embraced their local-TV host alter egos during a comical appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Wednesday night.
The Saturday Night Live alums dressed as their fictional TV-host characters, Cord Hosenbeck and Tish Cattigan, as they discussed their upcoming live coverage of this year's Rose Parade, presented by Funny or Die and set to stream on Amazon Prime Video for the first time.
"It is such a thrill. We started in Syracuse, New York, News 4," Ferrell's Hosenbeck began explaining of their hosting background. "We even got a job once describing the parade for the deaf," Shannon's Cattigan added. "You mean the blind?" Kimmel asked, only for Shannon and Ferrell to emphasize that they meant what they said. "We don't know sign language, but you know," Ferrell joked.
The pair then began praising Kimmel, expressing how honored they felt to be guests on his show. The pair even joked about an incident that interrupted their 25-year co-hosting run.
"Twenty-five years. Except for 2007," Ferrell said, with Kimmel then asking what occurred in 2007 to pause their TV-run. "You're trying to trick me," Ferrell said, with Shannon jokingly adding, "It's not something we want to get into. Keep it positive."
Ferrell and Shannon then improvised their characters' backstories, comically bantering with each other and Kimmel. Ferrell's Hosenbeck revealed that throughout the year he's a "fitness and health expert," gives "motivational speeches," is "single by choice" and raises and breeds basset hounds. Meanwhile, Shannon's Cattigan is an author of books on relationships and co-dependency.
As they prepare for their Rose Parade coverage, the pair also began discussing the flowers displayed in the parade. Alternating turns naming flowers, things became awkward when Shannon joked, "What's the one they get heroin from? Oh, poppies!"
Ferrell also took a moment to mock ABC's The Bachelor, which Kimmel has been known to comically cover every season on his show. "There's going to be so many roses used for the Rose Parade that there won't be a final rose for The Bachelor."
Apart from the Rose Parade, the mock TV hosts plugged a holiday album, Tish the Season to Be Cordy, filled with songs they "haven't got the rights for" quite yet. The SNL alums then treated guests to a live performance of "I'll Be Home for Christmas."
Last month, Amazon made the announcement of the upcoming special, previewing the "parade legends" that would emcee the annual event. "Cord and Tish are parade legends, beloved the world over, and it was such a coup for us to steal them away to Amazon Prime Video for their first-ever live-streamed parade," said Amazon Originals head of unscripted Heather Schuster. "We're excited to bring Prime members this unprecedented live event from these veteran parade commentators."
