Wenders co-wrote and directed the original film about the Cuban band.

Wim Wenders, who co-wrote and directed the Oscar-nominated doc Buena Vista Social Club, has signed on to executive produce the follow-up film, Buena Vista Social Club: Adios.

Lucy Walker is directing the new documentary, which is produced by Christine Cowin and Zak Kilberg.

The film is currently in production and is expected to hit theaters in 2016.

The documentary will focus on the original Cuban musicians of the Buena Vista Social Club, who were first profiled in Wenders' 1999 film. The follow-up documentary, originally conceived by Montuno, will be an intimate look into the changes and success of the band over the past 20 years. Their fascinating stories take place against the unique and unprecedented political, social and cultural backdrop of Cuba in 2015.

Broad Green Pictures is financing the film and leading production alongside Blink TV and Convergent Media (formerly Social Construct Media). Broad Green has worldwide rights to the film and will distribute in the U.S., with Mister Smith Entertainment handling international sales.
