Woman Attacked by Shark Near Four Seasons Maui

Ulua Beach in Wailea, Hawaii

The California vacationer was bitten in waters only a short distance from the luxurious resort, an entertainment industry hotspot.

A vacationing woman who was snorkeling off of Ulua Beach in Maui was attacked by shark, forcing the temporary closure of the beach this week, local news stations reported.

Evonne Cashman, 56, was hospitalized at Maui Memorial Medical Center and is recovering from injuries that include an 18-inch wound on her back, according to Maui Now.

The shark "just came and hit me hard, and bit me hard; and I took off swimming to the shore as fast as I could," she told Maui Now in a taped interview from her hospital room as she recovered.

The shark attack occurred in waters that are only a short distance from the luxurious Four Seasons Maui, located at Wailea Beach. The resort is a well-known entertainment industry hotspot that has counted Steve Tisch, Kanye West, Steve Levitan as visitors.

Cashman will return to her hometown of Cerritos, Calif. next week, she told KCAL 9. "I can’t imagine not snorkeling again… and I don’t want to be afraid of the water."
