Images of a sad Brazilian soccer fan clutching a World Cup trophy were plastered across TV and Internet screens during Brazil’s 7-1 thrashing by Germany on Tuesday.

Fans even scored footage of mustached super fan Clovis Fernandes with sad music and posted those videos on YouTube.

But many outlets initially missed a touching moment between Fernandes and a German fan after the game.

According to the photo below, posted to Imgur and Reddit, Fernandes handed his trophy to a German fan and was quoted as saying, roughly translated, “Take it to the final! As you can see, it is not easy, but you deserve it. Congratulations."

Fernandes has been to seven World Cups and traveled to more than 60 countries to watch Brazil play 150 games, calling himself Brazil’s “12th player” according to a FIFA TV video profile.

Fernandes began attending World Cups with the 1990 tournament in Italy and has been to each subsequent one. He dresses like a traditional gaucho from his home state of Rio Grande do Sul and always carries a replica of the FIFA World Cup trophy, the profile explains, adding that he’s “an instantly recognizable figure wherever he goes.”
