'X Factor' makes splash in return

LONDON -- ITV's Simon Cowell-fronted music search show "The X Factor" returned for a fourth season Saturday night, with a record audience of almost 11 million tuning in to the hourlong show.

A peak of 10.7 million viewers (48%) tuned in to the ITV1 show, which aired from 7:40 p.m. to 8:40 p.m., attracting an average audience of 9.5 million, or 45% of the audience, according to ratings figures from BARB.

The ratings were up 2.5 million viewers from the Season 3 launch last year and eclipsed the finale ratings for Seasons 1 and 2.

"X Factor" performed particularly well among younger viewers, with 60% of all 16-34-year-old's tuning in, and the show trounced BBC1 entertainment show "DanceX," which garnered 2.7 million viewers in the same slot.
