Zach Galifianakis sits down with 'Schmucks'

"The Hangover" breakout Zach Galifianakis is negotiating to join the Paramount comedy "Dinner for Schmucks."

"Schmucks" has Jay Roach directing Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and Lucy Punch in a comedy about the most pathetic guy ever to be invited to another man's weekly dinner party. Galifianakis is playing an assistant manager of a mattress store who is dating Carell's ex-wife.

The film is scheduled to begin filming in the fall for a July 2010 release and is being co-financed by DreamWorks, Spyglass and Paramount.

The bearded comic performer has been much in demand since "Hangover" began its startling $400 million-plus worldwide run in June. Galifianakis recently signed on to star with Robert Downey Jr. in the Warner Bros. comedy "Due Date," to be directed by "The Hangover's" Todd Phillips starting in October.

Beyond that, the comedian has a "Hangover" sequel on tap and a handful of other comedies in development.

Galifianakis, who is repped by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners, will next appear in the Dimension comedy "Youth in Revolt," written by Gustin Nash and directed by Miguel Arteta. It hits theaters in October.
