Do We Want It? Zayn Malik's First Versus Versace Collection

Former boy bander turned sexy soloist Zayn Malik was tapped by Donatella Versace to create a rock 'n' roll-inspired collection with a streetwear twist for Versus Versace, the sexier, more rebellious offshoot of the Versace house, which was previously helmed by Anthony Vaccarello.
Though Malik has fronted for the brand since his collaboration was announced last October, including a Versus campaign which was photographed by model/shutterbug Gigi Hadid (who is also Malik's girlfriend of over a year), the collection, which dropped Monday, is his official design debut.
Though Versace herself noted that Malik's longtime gal pal played no direct role when it came to cinching his design deal with the Italian fashion house, she did add that witnessing Malik's gentlemanly behavior around the supermodel factored into her admiration of the former One Direction heartthrob. So it was interesting to see that Gigi's little sis, Bella, was the Hadid sister fronting for the new campaign.
The younger Hadid's star has been slowly rising behind Gigi — just today it was revealed that she was to be the new face of Max Mara accessories, a position previously held by her elder sister. That's on top of her recent gigs with Nike, Bulgari, Dior beauty, Fendi and more.
On Instagram, the Versus collection is called "street-ready" — and it does, indeed, feel very streetwear-focused. Almost too much so. From the "Z x V" branded elastic waist bands to the lace-front faux-leather biker pants to the baggy sweatpants and silk bomber jackets, the collection looks like something we've seen before.
That's not to say that the debut isn't very on-brand for Malik, who has taken on the image of bad-boy defector in the aftermath of his split from One Direction's more wholesome image. The dark color palette of olive green, burgundy and black is in keeping with Malik's mostly monochromatic wardrobe, and the athleisure-inspired staples (are those meggings, we spy?) pair perfectly with his footwear of choice: biker boots or sneakers.
The collection ranges from $175 for a logo t-shirt to $1,550 for an embroidered eco-leather men's biker jacket, which seems a bit steep for a collection that's one "Zayn"-branded tee of away from looking like tour merch. However, given Malik's rabid fan base, who have likely outgrown their One-D hoodies, the capsule will likely be a hit.
