Mobile game developer Zynga has acquired Echtra Games, a cross-platform studio led by developers of Torchlight and Diablo.

The San Francisco-based company will be developing a role-playing game in partnership with Zynga's NaturalMotion studio. "We share Zynga’s vision that cross-platform play is an essential part of the future of RPGs and interactive entertainment and are eager to apply our vast experience and talents to this effort," said Echtra Games founder Max Shaefer, a co-creator of genre-bending action franchises Torchlight and Diablo.

Echtra's leadership team has also worked on titles such as The Sims 4 and at companies such as Runic Games, Blizzard, Disney and Electronic Arts. The studio's first project, Torchlight III, was released in 2020.

"Max and his team at Echtra Games are responsible for some of the most legendary game properties ever created, and they are experts in the action RPG genre and cross-platform development," Zynga's CEO Frank Gibeau said in a statement. "I’m excited to welcome the Echtra Games team into the Zynga family. This acquisition will be instrumental in growing our iconic licenses and brands from mobile to PCs and consoles, while helping to further expand Zynga’s total addressable market."

Zynga was founded in 2007 and is headquartered in the U.S., with office locations in Canada, Ireland, India, Turkey and Finland. The company is known for casual word games such as Words With friends, as well as match-3 games and RPG-crossovers like Empires & Puzzles. Among other recent acquisitions, the company purchased Turkish developers Peak and Rollic, known for their work in the hyper-casual genre.
