Following in the footsteps of the Oscars, Golden Globes, Directors Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild, the Writers Guild of America has extended its traditional eligibility window and pushed back the timing of its annual awards due to the ongoing pandemic.

The Writers Guild Awards ceremony, which recognizes the best work in film, TV, new media, news, radio/audio and promotional categories, usually takes place in early to mid February, but the 2021 edition — the guild's 73rd — has been slated for Sunday, March 21, the organization announced Monday.

The eligibility window from which the WGA selects its nominees and winners is usually Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, but this year, "due to theater closures during the COVID-19 pandemic," the window for theatrical and documentary screenplays, which began on Jan. 1, 2020, will be extended until Feb. 28, 2021.

(The window for TV and new media will remain Jan. 1-Dec. 31, while news and TV documentary categories will recognize work done between Oct. 1, 2019 and Nov. 30, 2020.)

Submissions can be made beginning immediately. Nomination voting for adapted and original screenplays will run from Friday, Jan. 29 through Friday, Feb. 12, with the nominations announcement slated for Tuesday, Feb. 16, and final voting will run from Friday, Feb. 19 through Friday, March 5.

The annual 'And the Nominees Are...' panel will take place on a date TBD in March, and the annual 'Beyond Words' panel for Tuesday, March 21.
