Final Draft Awards to Honor 'The Post's' Liz Hannah and Former WGA West Chief Howard Rodman
While Liz Hannah — who, with Josh Singer, co-wrote The Post, her first produced screenplay — did not receive an Oscar nomination on Tuesday, she did learn that she has been tapped for the New Voice Award at the 13th annual Final Draft Awards.
Hannah will be honored alongside Howard A. Rodman, the screenwriter (2007's Savage Grace) and former president of WGA-West, who will be given the Hall of Fame Award "for his longtime devotion to writers and the writing community through his work with the WGA, USC and the Sundance Institute."
The awards ceremony will take place Feb. 8 at the Paramount Theatre on the Paramount lot and will be co-hosted by the comedy duo Randy Sklar and Jason Sklar.
Hannah, who is from New York, moved to Los Angeles to attend graduate school at the American Film Institute. After graduating with an MFA in producing, she spent the next few years working in development at Denver & Delilah before leaving to write full-time. Her script was ranked second on the 2016 Black List before being purchased by Amy Pascal's Pascal Pictures two days before the U.S. presidential election. She is now developing an anthology series for UCP based on Ann Shen's book Bad Girls Throughout History; a limited series at Amazon titled The Mercury 13; and a feature script, Only Plane in the Sky, for MGM. Hannah is the second recipient of the New Voice Award, which was introduced in 2017 and honored Insecure's Issa Rae.
Rodman, in addition to his screenwriting and work for the WGA, is also a professor in — and former chair of — the writing division at the USC School of the Cinematic Arts, and chair of USC's Scripter Awards; an artistic director of the Sundance Institute Screenwriting Labs; a member of the National Film Preservation Board; a fellow of the Los Angeles Institute for the Humanities; and a former member of the executive committee of the Writers Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. He follows into the Final Draft Hall of Fame the likes of Aaron Sorkin, Steven Zaillian, Robert Towne, Sydney Pollack and Robert McKee.
"We are truly honored to induct Howard A. Rodman into our Hall of Fame," Final Draft president Scott McMenamin said in a statement. "His dedication to the field of screenwriting and education, as well as commitment to the WGA, makes him the perfect candidate for this award." Added McMenamin, "Final Draft is also proud to be honoring Liz Hannah with this year's New Voice Award. Her journey with The Post is an inspiration to all screenwriters, and the themes of the film could not be more relevant."
