Uggie will have to sit this one out.

Despite the canine's scene-stealing, The Artist was not among the films nominated by the Humane Society of the United States for its 26th annual Genesis Awards.

The kudos, handed out to news and entertainment media that push animal-friendly themes, announced potential 2012 recipients on Tuesday morning. War Horse, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Rio and Dolphin Tale were the four feature films receiving nominations.

On television, comedies up for a Genesis are The Cleveland Show, The Colbert Report and Melissa & Joey. Dramas receiving nominations are The Glades and Hawaii Five-0.

Dancing with the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba will host the Mar. 24 ceremony at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The proceedings will be broadcast as a one-hour special on Animal Planet later in May.

“It was an outstanding year for major feature films with strong animal protection content and, most significantly, a combined domestic box office gross of $468 million -- $1.17 billion worldwide," said HSUS senior director and event EP Beverly Kaskey. "Animal welfare concerns, such as chimpanzees being used in research which is addressed in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, are reaching huge audiences, thanks to the quality and engaging storylines of these films."
