Coldplay Rocker Chris Martin Debuts Original Song About Julia Roberts' Famous Smile
Mona Lisa who?
Coldplay frontman Chris Martin made an unannounced appearance on Friday night at the amfAR Gala Los Angeles — where his friend Julia Roberts was being feted with the Award of Courage — to perform a set of songs that included a rendition of the Roy Orbison classic "Oh, Pretty Woman."
If that weren't enough to captivate the crowd of A-listers that included Sean Penn, Kate Hudson, Goldie Hawn, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Ryan Murphy, Martin followed it up by asking the night's host James Corden to join him onstage for a duet on "Nothing Compares 2 U." (The event — held at Ron Burkle's Green Acres Estate in Beverly Hills and sponsored by Harry Winston, MAC Viva Glam and AMTD Group with Moet Hennessy, Cadillac and PatBO — raised $2 million for amfAR.)
Martin explained why they picked that Prince-penned Sinead O’Connor hit. “We’re singing this to Julia basically because we grew up fancying her and this is kinda the only song that says it, right?” he said, to which the multi-talented Corden added, “Yes, certainly the notion of the chorus is how everybody feels.”
Speaking of feels, there are few who don't adore Roberts' mega-watt smile. So somebody should bestow some sort of honor on Martin, who then closed out his set with an original song he wrote that was completely devoted to the actress' killer grin, a track that proved he knows her filmography well with mentions of everything from Mystic Pizza to Erin Brockovich. Curiously absent: Mona Lisa Smile.

Chris Martin's "Julia Roberts' Smile"
When there are things in the world that get me so down
The weight of that violence that cracks the ground
I can’t walk the sewers no more, I’m scared of that clown
I ask all the mystics as they sat still
How do we survive in a world of ill
They said you watch 'Mystic Pizza' on 'Notting Hill'
Because in those movies you get to see
A beautiful piece of god’s dentistry
When you see that how hopeless can you be
When you watch 'Pretty Woman,' 'Erin Brockovich'
Those miraculous molars of faith’s light switch
It's the smile that lifts you when life’s a bitch
It’s the smile that lights up the whole darn earth
Even when she plays a spider or when she plays a smurf
That Julia Roberts smile, it stretches for half a mile
It never goes out of style
It just shines like a great big star
Watching 'My Best Friend's Wedding' and looking at that beautiful grin
On top of that lucky chin
Whoa, now look at just how happy we are
Take it now …
When things in the world are beyond belief
Just give me that set of big pearly teeth
And give me that smile that shines so bright
And I’ll know everything’s gonna be alright. Alright, alright, alright, alright, alright
Where’s that Julia Roberts smile
It stretches for half a mile
It's wider than the River Nile
It’s a great constellation of light
Oh watching 'My Best Friend’s Wedding,' and looking at that beautiful grin
I’ll never think of giving in because I know everything will be alright
When my head starts to spin, I just stand and look at that beautiful grin
I never think of giving in, I know that everything will be alright
Take it fellas ...
Thanks a lot everybody we’re done
