'Knight of Cups' Producers Screen LA-Centric Film at New Indie Theater in NYC
Ahead of the Metrograph's official opening next week, the new independent theater in New York City's Lower East Side held a special screening of the Los Angeles-centric Knight of Cups on Monday night.
The Terrence Malick film stars Christian Bale on a journey through the sandy shores and soundstages of L.A. in search of love and self. Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Wes Bentley, Brian Dennehy, Freida Pinto, Imogen Poots and Antonio Banderas co-star in the Broad Green Pictures release — as does the city of Los Angeles, said the producers.
"It's such an extraordinary place with so many people doing amazing things, and there's so much beauty and so much pain," Sarah Green told The Hollywood Reporter. "It's a very rich ground and a place of myriad distractions, and if you're telling a story of a person who loses his way, it's a good place to lose your way."
Candice Bergen, Michelle Collins, Alan Cumming, Tavi Gevinson and Paul Haggis, among others, gathered at the as-yet-unopened theater for the screening and drinks afterward.
"With any Terrence Malick film, on one hand, you'll see a plot and narrative to some extent, and on the other, it's really for you to be able to fill in the blanks with your own experience, whether it's your life experience or how you're feeling today or tomorrow," producer Nicolas Gonda said while introducing the movvie. "It's like a mirror, where in addition to all of what we've put onscreen, you will hopefully find yourself."
Knight of Cups hits theaters on March 4.
