The New Yorker Planning In-Depth Look at Hollywood Awards Campaigns

The New Yorker is taking another dive into Hollywood with an in-depth feature, but this time the focus is the pomp and circumstance of awards season campaigning.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that writer Michael Schulman has been taking meetings with top awards consultants, interviewing them about the minutiae of the race for gold including all of the politics, events and personalities that come with it. But don't expect an exposé-type long-form piece.

According to several sources, Schulman is just fascinated by the awards season and is expected to keep it light. "My sense is he's having some fun with the topic," says one industry insider.

In February 2016, The New Yorker published writer Nicholas Schmidle's in-depth piece about Harvey Levin and his TMZ operation, though that feature ended up being less biting than many had anticipated.

As for Schulman, he's been a New Yorker contributor since 2006, according to his official bio on the publication's website. He serves as the theatre editor of the section Goings On About Town and is a regular contributor to the section Talk of the Town. He's also a published author, having written Her Again: Becoming Meryl Streep for HarperCollins.

A rep for The New Yorker declined to comment, citing the publication's policy of not commenting on pieces that haven't been published.
