The Real Sprint: Going From Malibu Triathlon to the Emmys in One Day
Call it the healthiest form of counterprogramming.
Miles away from downtown Los Angeles' Emmy HQ at Microsoft Theater, hundreds of competitors lined up for the Sept. 18 Nautica Malibu Triathlon presented by Equinox at Zuma Beach. No Emmy nominees were spotted by The Hollywood Reporter in the bunch. However, some industry types did pull a triple-double of sorts by suiting up for the three continuous and sequential endurance disciplines (half-mile ocean swim, 18-mile bike ride and 4-mile run) and then finishing their night with another type of marathon — Hollywood's Emmy night.
Celebrities who participated include Zac Efron (competing with younger brother Dylan and two-time Olympic swimmer Conor Dwyer), Max Greenfield, James Marsden, Josh Hopkins, Mark Feuerstein and How to Get Away With Murder trio Alfred Enoch, Karla Souza and Jack Falahee.
WME was also well represnted by a team of eight including TV agents Abe Cohen Hoffing and Jordan Cerf and executive vp corporate communications Marie Sheehy. Cerf says preparation was key for him in transitioning from triathlon to Emmys. "Both events are pretty physically and mentally challenging — it’s a full day in sharky waters," he quiped, before adding that the feat required a bit of double-checking his packed bags to make sure the wetsuit and helmet were in one bag and the tux and bowtie were in the other. "Otherwise you'd come out of the water looking like 007."
Management 360's Jill McElroy admits she skipped the big event on Sunday in Malibu in favor of a longer race on Sept. 17. "I skipped the parties on Friday so I could get a good night's rest, competing in the long course on Saturday morning, then rested up for the HBO party on Sunday night in support of Game of Thrones."
