Could ABC be the one to finally get the best of Susan Lucci‘s Erica Kane?
Internet speculation has taken off about the possible cancellation of ABC’s long-running soap opera All My Children — whose creator, Agnes Nixon, received the Daytime Emmys’ Lifetime Achievement Award last year — but the network remains steadfast in its commitment to the soap opera that’s been a staple of its daytime lineup since Jan. 5, 1970.
“[A recent online rumor] is just another story in a long line of stories about this same topic,” a network rep said via email.
ABC, which owns and produces all of its soaps, including One Life to Live and General Hospital, moved All My Children‘s filming from New York to Los Angeles in 2009 in a bid to save on production costs.
Other networks have continued to cut back on soaps as CBS’ The Guiding Light, As the World Turns and NBC’s Passions were all canceled within the past five years as ratings continue to slide.
All My Children has seen its household rating dip from a 3.4 in 2000-01 to a 2.0 for its 2009-10 season.
