Nicki Minaj is stepping behind the camera for her latest venture.
ABC Family has picked up a comedy executive produced by the singer and rapper to series, the channel announced Tuesday.
The half-hour, single-camera comedy is based on Minaj’s family’s immigration from Trinidad in the early ‘90s. The untitled series will center on her childhood in Queens, N.Y., with her vibrant family and will reveal how her evolution led to her eventual rise to international fame. The project will shoot in Minaj’s hometown of Queens starting this winter.
“This is one of the more unique adventures I’ve ever embarked on,” said Minaj in a statement. “I couldn’t be more proud and excited to team up with an amazing group of people to give the world something really special.”
Kate Angelo (Will & Grace) penned the pilot and will write the project. She will exec produce the series with Minaj, Aaron Kaplan (Chasing Life), Stella Bulochnikov and Brian Sher (Boss), as well as Gee Roberson.
“Nicki Minaj is a force to be reckoned with at everything she touches,” said ABC Family exec vp development Karey Burke. “We’re beyond thrilled to bring her one-of-a-kind story to our channel. Nicki is an international superstar, yet not everyone knows how inspiring and hilarious her true story is, and we can’t wait to share it with the world.”
In addition to her one-season stint on American Idol, Minaj has appeared in Ice Age: Continental Drift, The Other Woman and the upcoming Barbershop 3. Her biggest musical hits include “Super Bass,” “Starships” and “Anaconda,” among others.
The series order marks ABC Family’s latest foray into single-camera comedies following Kevin From Work, which debuted in August. The channel’s other comedies include multicamera entries Young & Hungry, which was renewed recently, and Baby Daddy. This is also the latest collaboration between ABC Family and musical talent. The network is working with Christina Aguilera on a drama and on a comedy from longtime music manager Irving Azoff.
