ABC Family’s Mortal Instruments adaptation Shadowhunters has cast its leading lady.
Happyland alum Katherine McNamara will play the title role in the upcoming TV adaptation, the network announced Wednesday.
Based on the best-selling young adult fantasy book series, Shadowhunters follows Clary Fray, who finds out on her 18th birthday that she is not who she thinks she is, but rather comes from a long line of Shadowhunters — human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. When her mother is kidnapped, Clary is thrown into the world of demon hunting with mysterious Shadowhunter Jace and her best friend, Simon. Now living among faeries, warlocks, vampires and werewolves, Clary begins a journey of self-discovery as she learns more about her past and what her future may hold.

The cast also includes Alberto Rosende (Blue Bloods) as Simon, Clary Fray’s longtime best friend. Simon was portrayed by Robert Sheehan in the film. Emeraude Toubia is Isabelle Lightwood, a Shadowhunter who is as lethal with a whip as she is beautiful. Jemima West played Isabelle in the movie.
Constantin Film will produce, and Ed Decter (Helix, Unforgettable, The Client List) is on board to serve as showrunner and executive producer. McG is on board to exec produce and direct the first episode. Shadowhunters is being eyed as a 13-episode drama with a premiere date not yet determined. Production begins this month in Toronto.
McNamara’s other credits include 30 Rock, Law & Order: SVU and the upcoming Maze Runner sequel. She is repped by Cunningham Escott Slevin & Doherty, Atlas Artists and Jackoway Tyerman.
