The youth-skewing, Disney-owned cable network has renewed the procedural for a second season ahead of its Aug. 4 summer finale, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The drama, starring Emma Ishta, Kyle Harris and Salli Richardson-Whitfield, marks the cabler’s first procedural series and was a high priority for new network president Tom Ascheim. Through its first six episodes, the series has averaged 930,000 total viewers on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. The show ranks as cable’s top scripted entry in the slot among adults 18-34.
Stitchers, from writer Jeff Schechter (Overruled!), centers on a young woman recruited into a covert government agency to be “stitched” into the minds of the recently deceased, using their memories to investigate murders and decipher mysteries that otherwise would have gone to the grave. Jonathan Baruch and Robert Wolken executive produce alongside Schechter.
“Fans are enjoying the camaraderie of the Stitchers team and a lead character that is unapologetically smart, focused and a great role model to young women,” said Karey Burke, exec vp programming and development at ABC Family. “We look forward to seeing more of the Stitchers team tackling diverse cases as they unravel the mystery behind the program’s creation.”
Stitchers is one of a handful of new series to bow on ABC Family under Ascheim. The executive slowly has been rebranding the network with a plan to focus on “becomers” and age up the network. His goal is to double its original programming over the next four years.
