ABC is once again looking into the vaults for its next primetime hit.
The network, which found success last summer with Celebrity Family Feud, has ordered a revival of $100,000 Pyramid, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The new version of the classic game show will be hosted by Michael Strahan, who co-hosts Live! With Kelly and Michael, from ABC’s syndicated arm, and also serves as a contributor on Good Morning America.
The format of the series will remain the same, with two teams of celebrities and average Joes teaming up to give and receive clues in various word-association games. The victors then get a chance to play in a bonus round, where they can win a huge monetary prize of as much as, yes, $100,000 in the most recent iterations.
Ten new episodes will premiere this summer. The news was first reported by Vulture. ABC declined to comment.
Strahan replaces longtime host Dick Clark, although several other personalities served as emcee over the years, including Donny Osmond.
ABC’s revival marks the first time $100,000 Pyramid will air in primetime. The game show debuted in 1973 on CBS as a daytime series. A year later, it moved to ABC and another version began in syndication. Despite various starts and stops, $100,000 Pyramid survived most of the late 1980s before wrapping. The show was most recently brought back by GSN in 2012, but lasted less than two months.
CBS, in 2009, and TBS, in 2011, toyed with reviving the series with host Andy Richter, but both networks ultimately passed.
Strahan will exec produce alongside Constance Schwartz and Vin Rubino on the revival, which hails from Sony Television.
In addition to Celebrity Family Feud, which has yet to be formally announced for a 2016 return, ABC recently renewed its Battle Bots revival with plans to air the series this summer.
The network is in the midst of a push further into unscripted territory, thanks to veteran performers The Bachelor and Dancing With the Stars, as well as younger fare like Shark Tank and Extreme Weight Loss.
