ABC has made it official, picking up Shawn Ryan‘s futuristic project Last Resort to pilot.
From Sony Pictures Television, Resort revolves around the crew of a U.S. nuclear submarine who, after ignoring an order to fire nuclear missiles, wind up being hunted and escape to a NATO outpost where they declare themselves to be the world’s smallest nuclear nation.
The pilot, which received a pilot production commitment in August, is written by Karl Gajdusek and Ryan, with The Shield creator on board to executive produce. The pilot order was expected, with the project enlisting Casino Royale director Martin Campbell to helm the project earlier this week.
Resort becomes the second drama project to receive a pilot commitment from the netwok, joining the untitled Roland Emmerich election drama. The Disney-owned network has also picked up a pair of comedy projects to pilot: Dan Fogelman’s untitled alien family comedy and the Kirstie Alley starrer The Manzanis.
Resort is one of two projects Ryan has in contention this development season. The Chicago Code creator also has a crime procedural with Criminal Minds’ Simon Mirren set up at CBS. That project, also from Sony Pictures Television, revolves around a genetic scientist who uses his own psychopath gene to assist the FBI. It’s based on the real life story of IC Irvine processor/scientist James Fallon.
