ABC is heading into summer with a mix of reality and scripted.
The network announced a summertime lineup, which includes two new series, an innovative procedural entitled Motive and a mystery reality competition show, Whodunnit? from CSI creator Anthony E. Zuiker. The former will have its debut following the finale of the Dancing with the Stars results show May 21, before moving to its regular time period on May 23 at 9 p.m.; the latter will premiere June 23 at 9 p.m.
Motive, another international co-production, centers on Angie Flynn, a loving single mother and a damned good detective, along with her partner, Detective Oscar Vega, who are looking for clues that will lead them to the killer. The entry turns the tried-and-true crime drama formula on its head by identifying the killer and victim at the beginning of each episode rather than at the end. The summer series stars Kristin Lehman (The Killing) as Flynn, Louis Ferreira (Rookie Blue) as Vega, as well as Lauren Holly (NCIS), Roger Cross (24), Brendan Penny and Cameron Bright (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2). Motive was created by Dexter’s Daniel Cerone, who executive produces the show along with Louise Clark, Rob Merilees, Erin Haskett, Rob LaBelle, Lindsay Macadam and James Thorpe. The series was developed by CTV and is produced by Foundation Features and Lark Productions in association with Bell Media and distributed by NBCUniversal International.

For its part, Whodunnit, from Zuiker and reality vet Cris Abrego, puts 13 contestants’ investigative skills to the test in a mystery reality competition. Each week, players will use a variety of crime-scene investigation techniques to meticulously uncover evidence that will ultimately reveal who among them is the killer. The interactive series, which will air over nine episodes, will have its contestants reside on a glamorous estate, where each week they must solve a new crime in order to advance in the game. Failure to solve the crime will lead to a player’s demise, until only three are left. In the final episode, one player will unmask the killer and take home the $250,000 prize. The summer entry is produced by Dare to Pass and 51 Minds, with Zuiker and Abrego on board as executive producers. Matt Weinberg, president of Dare to Pass, will serve as a producer as well.
The pairing will join returning unscripted shows Celebrity Wife Swap, which has its summer bow on June 23; a second season of Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition, which begins on May 28; What Would You Do? on May 29; and long-running reality staple Wipeout on May 9. Scripted effort Rookie Blue, another cost-effective co-pro will return for its summer run May 23.
The Bachelorette will premiere at a special time on May 20, following the finale of the Dancing with the Stars performance show, before moving to its regular time period premiere on May 27. Scripted drama Mistresses, starring Alyssa Milano, Yunjin Kim, Rochelle Aytes and Jes Macallan, will premiere a week later than initially announced, on June 3 at 10 p.m.
