Agents of SHIELD is losing (at least) one core agent during Tuesday’s season-three finale.
The two-hour season finale will pay off the deadly vision twist that Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet) received during the midseason premiere. One of the SHIELD agents will die up in space in a fiery explosion, leaving a floating gold crucifix necklace as the only clue to the person’s identity. While that necklace used to belong to Inhuman SHIELD agent Elena/Yo-Yo (Natalia Cordova-Buckley), she recently gave it to Mack (Henry Simmons) to help him keep the faith after Daisy, swayed by Hive (Brett Dalton), beat him up and almost killed him.
Does that mean Mack is destined to die in space? Not necessarily. Here, The Hollywood Reporter rounds up and ranks all the likely candidates who may die in the season-three finale.
8. Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge)
Simmons has taken up more of an interest in field work and learning how to fight with May (Ming-Na Wen) as her trainer, but that doesn’t mean she’ll find herself piloting a Quinjet on her own up into space. Unless her desire to get revenge on Hive for killing her love, Will (Dillon Casey), propels her to do something rash, it’s doubtful she’s the agent destined for death.
7. Melinda May
May will do anything to kill Hive, especially since one of his henchmen killed her ex-husband, Andrew/Lash (Blair Underwood), and swayed one of her best trainees, Daisy. But May has no connection to Yo-Yo’s necklace, so she’s likely to survive the season finale…or if she gets in over her head in a fight, at least she won’t die in space.
6. Leo Fitz (Iain de Caestecker)
Fitz may have had quite the grudge against Ward (Brett Dalton) since he was responsible for Fitz’s brain injury at the end of season one, but he finally got closure when he watched Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) kill Ward up on Maveth. Hive may have taken over Ward’s body, but he didn’t inherit the blame for Ward’s actions. Plus, Fitz has only just begun his long-awaited relationship with Simmons, so he’s less inclined to do anything crazy to jeopardize his chance at a happy future with her.
5. Elena “Yo-Yo“
Although Yo-Yo gave her necklace to Mack, there’s a solid chance she could end up back in possession of it before the season bows.
4. Phil Coulson
Coulson is a likely candidate, because as director of SHIELD, he has to make the tough calls. He’s also still blaming himself for Hive escaping back to Earth after he killed Ward, giving the ancient Inhuman another body to take over. Now that Hive has a nuclear warhead to disperse his Inhuman virus on a global scale, Coulson will do anything he can to stop it, even if that means sacrificing himself for the good of everyone else. But he has no connection to Yo-Yo’s necklace, so he’s not the most likely candidate.
3. Lincoln (Luke Mitchell)
As the only other person besides Daisy who knows about her vision, Lincoln could take matters into his own hands with making sure the vision comes true if it means saving the whole world from becoming primitive Inhumans swayed to Hive. After talking all season about how Inhumans were made to serve a specific purpose, maybe his is to save the world? But the only hiccup in that theory is how would he become the owner of Yo-Yo’s necklace?
After hurting all her friends at SHIELD while under Hive’s sway, Daisy has a long way to go to get redemption. Could that possibly propel her to sacrifice herself and take on the vision as her own destiny? She doesn’t know who has the gold crucifix necklace, but she could make it her mission to find it and save the world from Hive on her own, sealing her own death warrant. She’s suffering major withdrawal symptoms from losing Hive’s sway, so her depression could fuel that decision.
1. Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie
But the most likely candidate could still be Mack, since he’s currently the owner of the gold crucifix necklace. The SHIELD mechanic has suffered a lot at the hands of HIVE, losing his partner Daisy to the Inhuman’s sway. It’s highly possible that Mack will try to sacrifice himself for the good of saving the world.
