Freeform is showing an early sign of confidence in Alone Together.
The Disney-owned cable network has handed out an early 10-episode season-two renewal for the comedy ahead of its series debut.
In the single-camera comedy — produced by Lonely Island trio Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer — Esther Povitsky and Benji Aflalo star as two overlooked millennial misfits from different backgrounds trying to make their way in the vain and status-obsessed culture of L.A. These two only find salvation in their male/female strictly platonic friendship. The series will premiere its first 10 episodes Jan. 10 at 8:30 p.m. on Freeform.
“Alone Together is easily the best show ever made,” Lonely Island’s Samberg, Schaffer and Taccone said in a joint statement. “If you don’t watch it, you’re a fool. There are 4 million shows on TV but this is the only one worth watching.”
Povitsky, Aflalo and Eben Russell (Girlboss) created the series and serve as writers and executive producers. Samberg, Taccone, Schaffer, Becky Sloviter and Hunter Covington also executive produce.
Alone Together is part of a rapidly growing slate of scripted originals at Freeform that includes upcoming comedies Grown-ish (a spinoff of ABC’s Black-ish) and New Warriors and dramas Cloak and Dagger and The Siren. The Alone Together pickup comes after Freeform handed out a two-season, 20-episode renewal for summer hit The Bold Type, and an additional 10-episode order for season three of Shadowhunters. The cabler’s slate also includes The Fosters, Young & Hungry, Beyond and Famous in Love.
