The Son will return to AMC.
The Pierce Brosnan-led drama has been renewed for a second season at the cable network, it was announced Friday. The Western will return in 2018 with 10 new episodes.
“The Son proudly continues our Westerns tradition at AMC, including Broken Trail, Hell on Wheels and decades of films from The Duke, Clint and so many more. We are so pleased to add to that list another season of our original, multi-generational drama from Philipp Meyer, Kevin Murphy and a remarkable cast led by the incomparable Pierce Brosnan,” AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios president Charlie Collier said in a statement. “It’s our longstanding mission to super-serve Westerns fans on weekends and we look forward to continuing this epic next year. Welcome home, Son.”
Based on the New York Times best-selling book of the same name by Meyer, The Son is a sweeping saga about a Texas ranching and oil family that spans three generations and 150 years. The series specifically looks at the transformation of patriarch Eli McCullough (Brosnan) from good-natured innocent to calculating killer.
Meyer also co-created the series and executive produces with fellow writers Lee Shipman, Brian McGreevy and showrunner Kevin Murphy. Tom Lesinski and Jenna Santoianni also exec produce the drama, which hails from AMC Studios and Sonar Entertainment.

The Son launched in April across multiple AMC-owned networks, including SundanceTV. According to AMC, season one is averaging 2.3 million viewers and ranks as the top original cable program on Saturday nights. Although Saturday has traditionally been a quiet night for originals, AMC previously found success there airing later seasons of the Civil War-era drama Hell on Wheels.
The Son joins fellow AMC originals The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, Better Call Saul, Preacher, Into the Badlands, Humans and the upcoming final seasons of Turn: Washington’s Spies and Halt and Catch Fire.
For Brosnan, The Son marks his first TV series regular role in three decades, as Remington Steele went off the air in 1987.
