The season-six premiere of FX anthology American Horror Story is about a month away and yet the theme remains a mystery.
Speaking to reporters Tuesday at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, FX CEO John Landgraf said die-hard viewers waiting for an announcement about the subject matter of season six of the Ryan Murphy drama will have to keep waiting.
“Every year, we lay out the themes and the new genre Ryan is going to be approaching; we thought it’d be fun [this year] to keep it a mystery — so we are,” Landgraf said.
Landgraf noted that he’s working closely with showrunner Murphy and FX marketing boss Stephanie Gibbons — who has won multiple awards for her AHS campaigns — and is seeing scripts with key details blacked out. What’s more, only one script is being hand delivered to FX and is plastered with Landgraf’s name all over it.
“There are many more trailers than you’ve actually seen for hypothetical seasons of American Horror Story — different genres, different places,” Landgraf said of the season-six campaign. “One of them is accurate; the others are all misdirects.”
What is known about the forthcoming season from the drama co-created by Murphy and Brad Falchuk is that most of its ensemble cast is expected to return. Murphy previously made offers to all of his season-five stars and noted that they’re welcome to return if they so desire. Angela Bassett and Cheyenne Jackson are officially confirmed and Lady Gaga will also come back at some point.
As for the endgame for the franchise, Landgraf reiterated that the anthology will run as long as Murphy has ideas and wants to do it.
