Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman Reuniting for NBC Reality Competition

Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman are getting the band back together — sort of.

The former Parks and Recreation co-stars are returning to NBC with a six-episode reality competition, The Handmade Project, which they will both host.

Described as a celebration of “artisanship and the makers who can create amazing things with their hands,” it is the first project born of Poehler’s overall deal with Universal Television Alternative Studio.

“I’m thrilled to be celebrating artists who make things by hand, and I’m looking forward to finally conquering my fear of paper mache,” Poehler said Tuesday in a statement.

It’s a niche idea for a reality show, but not far afield from previous NBC successes in the genre. Just last year, the network earned surprisingly strong ratings with senior-centric travel series Better Late Than Never.

Handmade Project, not to be confused with Hulu’s upcoming adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale, will pit eight makers against one another to build crafts that will impress both the hosts and a panel of judges.

“With millions of mass-produced products, a handmade item can be the most valuable treasure one can possess because it’s one of a kind and made with love,” said studio president Meredith Ahr. “We are thrilled that Amy Poehler’s first venture into the unscripted space is so refreshingly unexpected and original, and can’t wait to see Amy and Nick back together again.”

Offerman, a noted woodworker, offered this: “People who make things are my favorite kind of folk. Practical, clever and terrific in a pinch. That makes me tickled pink to have a front-row seat at this prodigious display of talent, and admiring and cheering on an amazing crop of American makers. Plus, Amy and I have a strong tradition of tomfoolery, so let’s see if we don’t have some good fun.”

The Handmade Project was developed by Nicolle Yaron and Poehler’s Paper Kite Productions.
