Anthony Bourdain will say goodbye to his critically acclaimed Travel Channel series, No Reservations, when the ninth and final season unspools next month.
Bourdain’s last hurrah on the cult foodie adventure show, in which Bourdain traverses the globe in search of offbeat fare and an off-the-beaten-path view of destinations from Namibia to Paris to Key West, will debut Sept. 3 at 9 p.m. ET, Travel Channel announced Monday. Ahead of the premiere, the network will air a nine-hour marathon featuring fans’ favorite episodes from seasons past.
For season nine, the acid-tongued chef-turned-author-turned-popular TV curmudgeon ventures to such locales as Austin, Texas; Rio De Janeiro; the Dominican Republic; the Burgundy region of France; and Sydney, Australia, where he swims with the sharks. In the final episode, he returns to his native New York City. All the while, he makes new friends, samples local food and drinks copious amounts of alcohol.
STORY: Anthony Bourdain Exits Travel Channel for CNN
No Reservations premiered in 2005, and won an Emmy four years later for outstanding choreography for nonfiction programming. This year, it is nominated for four Emmys including outstanding nonfiction series.
In May, it was announced that Bourdain, a self-styled raconteur who routinely makes headlines for his public spats with Paula Deen, will star in his own show on CNN starting in early 2013. The untitled CNN program will air Sunday evenings and repeat on Saturdays, following a similar format to No Reservations.
“I think he’s been a little bit frustrated,” Mark Whitaker, CNN Worldwide executive vp and managing editor, told THR at the time. “He’s gone to a lot of places at the Travel Channel but there are some places that he hasn’t been able to go.”
Travel Channel’s No Reservations spinoff featuring Bourdain, dubbed The Layover, recently began production on season two. New episodes of both shows will continue to air into 2013.
THR reported in June that ABC had tapped Bourdain and celebrity chef Nigella Lawson to co-host an untitled cooking competition; Bourdain has been a frequent guest judge — and intimidating presence — on Bravo’s Top Chef.
