A longtime Atlanta radio personality has been fired for splicing together old sound bites of GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump and pawning it off as a new interview, general manager for NewsRadio 106.7 confirmed to The Hollywood report.
Steve McCoy was terminated from the station Friday after the Trump campaign accused him of falsifying an interview with the billionaire businessman, which McCoy aired Tuesday before the Democratic primary debate.
“He admitted he re-purposed an old interview,” said Sean Shannon, the station’s general manager. Shannon confirmed McCoy had been terminated, but declined to comment further.
The Trump campaign never spoke to McCoy at any time, according to a statement from Hope Hicks, spokeswoman for Trump.
“The radio host admitted it was a fraud to our attorney, apologized and he is now hiding and not returning anyone’s call,” Hicks said. “This is representative of the dishonesty Mr. Trump faces from the media.”
Clips from the fake interview played by WXIA-TV based in Atlanta featured McCoy asking “Trump” if he was planning on watching the Democratic debate, which Trump’s voice replied with “no.” Trump did watch the debate and live tweeted it.
