For the past year Karl Stefanovic, a morning talk show host in Australia, has intentionally worn the same blue suit almost every day, with the exception of a few days when he sent it away for dry cleaning.
However, according to Stefanovic, nobody has ever commented on his repetitive fashion choice. This was all his way of calling attention to the sexism his female co-anchor faces for her own attire.
At first, Stefanovic didn’t even tell his Today co-host, Lisa Wilkinson, what he was doing. Then, after a month he revealed his silent protest to Wilkinson, although he continued the experiment for another year. Only Wilkinson and another co-worker knew about Stefanovic’s protest. Meanwhile, Wilkinson often receives letters, emails and tweets about her fashion choices, her hairstyle, and her makeup.
“No one has noticed; no one gives a shit,” Stefanovic told Fairfax Media. “But women, they wear the wrong color and they get pulled up. They say the wrong thing and there’s thousands of tweets written about them.”
“I’m judged on my interviews, my appalling sense of humor — on how I do my job, basically,” said Stefanovic, “whereas women are quite often judged on what they’re wearing or how their hair is.”
Watch below to see all of the suits the TV anchor has worn in the past year, as well as a clip of him talking about it with his co-workers, who tease him about the suit’s smell.
