ABC is looking for a master couch detective.
In a competitive situation with multiple networks bidding, ABC has handed out a hefty put-pilot commitment to an hourlong comedic mystery from Awkward creator Lauren Iungerich, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Called Couch Detective, the project is described as a comedic mystery that follows the exploits of a thirtysomething female “couch detective” who solves crimes based on her encyclopedic knowledge of every true-crime TV special, police procedural and made-for-TV movie.
Iungerich, who exited MTV’s critical darling in June 2013, will pen the script and executive produce the Warner Bros. Television entry alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and his studio-based banner. Jerry Bruckheimer Television president Jonathan Littman and executive vp KristieAnne Reed will also executive produce.
Couch Detective marks Iungerich’s first sale of the season. Last year, Iungerich was heavily pursued by multiple studios for an overall deal but instead opted to only ink a blind script deal with WBTV. That produced ABC comedy Damaged Goods, which was picked up to pilot but ultimately did not move forward. Couch Detective reunites Iungerich with both the network and studio behind the comedy that explored sexual politics.
For Bruckheimer, this marks his second sale of the development season. It joins Two Black Cadillacs, a drama based on the Carrie Underwood song that’s set up at Fox as an event series.
Iungerich is repped by WME, Madhouse Entertainment and McKuin Frankel. Bruckheimer is with CAA and Bloom Hergott.
