BBC director general Tony Hall has allegedly received death threats after the network announced it is parting ways with Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson.
CNN reports that police were informed Wednesday of the alleged threats to Hall’s life. The threats came via email.
“Police in Westminster are investigating an allegation of threats to kill,” Metropolitan Police told CNN. “The content of the message suggests [it was sent] from outside the U.K.”
This follows the network’s announcement Wednesday that it would not be renewing Clarkson’s contract, expiring next month. Clarkson had been suspended from Top Gear on March 10 for an altercation with producer Oisin Tymon.
Clarkson has hosted Top Gear since 1988, and the show is the BBC’s most successful program.
