Prepare to meet the parents on Fox’s upcoming freshman comedy Ben and Kate.
Veteran actors Vernee Watson and Tom Wright have booked guest turns on the comedy starring Dakota Johnson and Nat Faxon as a single mother who gets help from her idiot brother, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.
Watson and Wright will play the parents to Echo Kellum‘s Tommy, the best friend to Faxon’s Ben, and first appear in the second episode, scheduled to air Oct. 2, with the potential to return.
In the episode, Watson (The Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men) will play Gladys Rusling, Tommy’s mother who is a willing accomplice as Ben, Kate (Johnson) and her daughter, Maddie (Maggie Elizabeth Jones) attempt to convince school board members that they all should live together — at her house.
Wright (Crash, Martial Law) will play Melvin Rusling, Tommy’s surly father who isn’t quite a willing participant in the family’s scheme — and would much rather be watching Murder, She Wrote.
Watson is repped by the Gage Group and Larrymore Kelly Entertainment & Literary Management; Wright is with Pakula/King & Associates and Lighthouse Entertainment.
Based on showrunner Dana Fox‘s (What Happens in Vegas) experiences with her own brother, Ben and Kate premieres at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, on Fox.
