BET isn’t wasting any time in locking down Being Mary Jane.
The Viacom-owned cable network has renewed the Gabrielle Union drama for a third season.
The news comes two days after the show’s second-season debut opened as the No. 1 original series premiere on cable of the year. The series, in its freshman run, ranked as the No. 1 new original drama series on cable among adults 18-49 and women 18-49.
Produced by Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil (The Game), the latter of whom directs, Being Mary Jane is one of only two remaining original scripted ongoing dramas on the network (joining Real Husbands of Hollywood). The network announced in October that flagship drama The Game — an import from the former WB Network/UPN — would end its run after its upcoming ninth season. The cabler also recently canceled Let’s Stay Together.
The Akils, meanwhile, have an overall deal with BET.
New episodes of Being Mary Jane air on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on BET.
