The biopic will follow the story of R&B pioneers Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell, Ronnie DeVoe, Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill as they navigate fame from their native Boston to Hollywood and beyond. New Edition was formed in the ‘70s and is best known for the Hot 100 hits “Candy Girl,” “Mr. Telephone Man” and “Cool It Now.”
The cast will include Empire star Bryshere Y. Gray as Bivins, singer Luke James as Gill, Algee Smith as Tresvant, Elijah Kelley as Bell, Keith Powers as DeVoe and Woody McClain as Brown. Notables including Wood Harris, Michael Rapaport, Tank, Faizon Love and Bre-Z are also expected to make cameos.
The New Edition Story is directed by Chris Robinson (ATL) and is co-produced by the band’s longtime manager and original choreographer, Brooke Payne. Members Bell, Bivins, DeVoe, Gill, Brown and Tresvant have also signed on as producers of the film.
