Johnny Galecki and Jim Parsons will each have two shows on CBS next season.
CBS has handed out a series order for Bible comedy By the Book (formerly known as Living Biblically).
Exec produced by Johnny Galecki via his overall deal with Big Bang Theory producers Warner Bros. Television, the comedy revolves around a modern-day man at a crossroads in his life who decides to live according to the Bible. Jay R. Ferguson, Lindsey Kraft, Ian Gomez, David Krumholtz, Tony Rock and Camryn Manheim star in the series based on the book The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs.
The multicamera comedy pilot was written by Patrick Walsh (2 Broke Girls), who exec produces alongside Galecki, Spencer Medof and Andrew Haas. The comedy stems from the overall deal Galecki scored as part of his Big Bang contract renegotiations with Warner Bros. Television.
With the pickup, CBS now has four new comedy series for the 2017-18 broadcast season. Galecki will now have two shows on the network’s schedule as Big Bang Theory scored a two-season renewal and will return in the fall with its 11th season. Fellow Big Bang star Parsons also will have a pair of shows on the air as the network went straight to series on prequel Young Sheldon. Parsons exec produces that comedy and will serve as the show’s narrator.
Overall, CBS now has eight new series for next season — even with last year — up one on the comedy side.
The network also announced today (May 12) a decision to cancel Warner Bros. Television-produced 2 Broke Girls.
The comedy marks another multicamera pickup at CBS, which with NBC, are the only networks with programming in that space.
