Welcome back to The Hollywood Reporter‘s weekly DC TV Watch, a rundown of all things DC Comics on the small screen. Every Saturday, we round up the major twists, epic fights, new mysteries and anything else that goes down on The CW’s Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl and Black Lightning, and Fox’s Gotham. This week, we’re breaking down all those burning questions that Black Lightning‘s season one finale raised and what that means for season two …
Black Lightning season two burning questions
What’s in the box? | One of the biggest cliffhangers left over from the season finale is the mysterious ASA briefcase that Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III) steals from Proctor (Gregg Henry) and, using Proctor’s severed thumbs (gross), opens to reveal something … glowing. What was Proctor hiding? Is it connected to Green Light since the glowing had a green hue? How is Tobias going to use it? Giving him access to this secret tech/substance/object means nothing good for Black Lightning (Cress Williams) or Freeland as a whole.
When will Black Lightning get his revenge? | After building to a big showdown between Black Lightning and Whale all season, it did not go down in the finale. In fact, Jefferson and Tobias never even came face to face in the episode. How long will it take these two to reunite and hash things over … violently? Will Jefferson finally get his revenge on Tobias for his father’s murder?
Will Jennifer become a hero? | If season one followed Anissa’s (Nafessa Williams) journey toward becoming Thunder, season two is going to follow Jennifer’s (China Anne McClain) journey in learning to control her powers and becoming Lightning. How will it be different from her sister’s arc? Will she suit up along with her father and sister this season? Does she even want to be a hero? If her attitude throughout season one is any indication, probably not.
How will full disclosure affect the Pierce family? | All the secrets have been revealed. Everything is out in the open. The Pierce family knows Jefferson is Black Lighting, Anissa is Thunder and Jennifer has powers. Will this family embrace honesty or will there be more secrets to discover in season two? How will this newfound honesty affect them as a family, and, potentially, a crime-fighting family?
How will Khalil change this year? | With his promotion to series regular for season two, Khalil (Jordan Calloway) will be getting an even bigger arc this year. Will he dive full tilt into becoming DC Comics villain Painkiller or will he feel regret over throwing away his life and love to make a deal with the devil?
How much darker will Gambi get? | Shooting Proctor point blank in the season finale was pretty ice cold, even if Gambi (James Remar) was doing it for the greater good and saving the Pierce family. Yes, Proctor was a cruel, corrupt government figure … but he was still a human being, so Gambi straight-up murdered him. How will this affect the loyal member of Team Black Lightning this season? Will he go even darker or will he pull back?
What is the ASA? | Even with Proctor’s death, the ASA is still out there. Gambi only cut off one head of the beast, and more will surely grow in its place. What is this shadowy organization planning? How will it return in season two? Who will be the new head of ASA?
Has Jefferson moved past his grief from losing his father? | The season one finale made a huge point of having Jefferson converse with his late father while he was knocked out, and it seemed to help Jefferson let go of his grief. But losing his father at such a young age (and because of Tobias) was a major drive for Jefferson to take on crime as Black Lightning. Now that he’s come to this emotional realization about his father, how will that affect Jefferson as a hero and father?
Will Lala come back to life … again? | After his miraculous resurrection in the middle of the first season, Lala (William Catlett) once again died in the finale, acting as a human bomb sent by Tobias. Will he come back to life again in season two, or is one miraculous resurrection the limit?
Will Black Lightning ever cross over with the other Arrow-verse series? | Executive producer Salim Akil has made it clear that Black Lightning stands on its own, separate from the Arrow-verse. But easter eggs and references peppered into the first season raised the question of if Black Lightning is connected to the CW’s other DC Comics series in some way. Will Black Lightning ever cross over with another series? It would certainly be difficult but not altogether impossible. …
Black Lightning returns for season two this fall on The CW.
