The Black List Launching TV Pilot Ranking (Exclusive)

For 12 years, the Black List has released an annual survey that highlights Hollywood’s best unproduced screenplays, as voted on by hundreds of film executives. The ranked list has become an industry staple, and screenplays on the list that have gone on to be produced have won 48 Oscars and earned more than $26 billion worldwide.

Now the Black List is tuning in to the small screen.

For the first time, it is surveying hundreds of TV executives, asking them to vote for their favorite unproduced TV pilots of all time. TV execs were contacted about a week ago and asked to send in their top 10 — or up to 10.

However, the results will only be made into an official annual Black List if the organization receives enough votes. The deadline to vote is 6 p.m. Friday, March 31.

“It will only be a valuable list if enough people vote, because voting process matters,” said Black List founder Franklin Leonard when contacted by THR. “And it would be a shame if someone ended up in a very important position because of a flawed voting process.”

The Black List for TV pilots will need to exceed the amount of voters who participate in the film survey (which is north of 250), so ideally 300 to 400 TV executives will participate. But even if the organization feels that it doesn’t have enough votes to create an official Black List for TV, it will release the voting results in some form.

The results of the survey are slated to be announced in late April.
