Freeform is going back to the newsroom.
The Disney-owned cable network has handed out a two-season, 20-episode renewal to summer breakout The Bold Type — with a new showrunner. Series creator Sarah Watson (Parenthood), who originally developed the show for NBC, will not return after creative differences with the network. Sweet/Vicious alum Amanda Lasher will take over as showrunner on the Universal Television-produced drama.
The Bold Type is inspired by the life of Hearst Magazines chief content officer (and former Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief) Joanna Coles and explores the lives and loves of those responsible for a global women’s magazine called Scarlet. Faking It grad Katie Stevens stars in the drama that in its first season explored issues including sexual assault, sexuality and the push and pull between balancing work and a career.
Launched out of the Pretty Little Liars series finale, The Bold Type launched in July to strong reviews and a decent showing for younger-skewing Freeform. Season one ended in early September with an average of 313,000 total viewers and a .15 among adults 18-49.
The Bold Type joins a roster of originals at Freeform that includes The Fosters, Shadowhunters, Beyond and Famous in Love as well as Young & Hungry and upcoming additions Cloak and Dagger, New Warriors, The Siren and Black-ish spinoff Grown-ish as the Tom Ascheim-led network courts the hard-to-reach millennial viewer.
Lasher’s credits include Riverdale, Togetherness, Gossip Girl, Lipstick Jungle and The Class. She is repped by Odenkirk Provissiero. The Bold Type is her first showrunning job.
Season one is on Freeform’s digital platforms and VOD as well as Hulu.
