Showtime’s official key art for the second season of its original period drama, The Borgias, suggests that the new Pope Alexander VI may have to watch his back within the Vatican’s walls as well as beyond them.

When the series returns, Rodrigo Borgia (Oscar-winner Jeremy Irons) will demand that his children join him in getting revenge against the families that opposed his climb to the papacy. That’s to be expected. But at the same time, his own family may become his biggest threats.
Cesare’s (François Arnaud) sibling rivalry with Juan (David Oakes) grows into resentment toward their father. And after Rodrigo’s horrible choice for her husband last season, Lucrezia (Holliday Grainger) is finding some independence. Who can blame her? All the while, Rodrigo’s very persistent nemesis Della Rovere (Colm Feore) hasn’t given up and he’s closing in on the Vatican’s new residents.
