Bravo is pushing further in scripted programming.
The NBCUniversal-owned cable network has given a series order to the dark comedy My So Called Wife (working title), The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The project centers on Maddie (Gang Related’s Inbar Lavi), a master-of-disguise con artist who gets men and women to fall in love with her, marries them and then disappears with their money and just enough dirty inside information to guarantee they will never go to the police. But things get complicated when her latest victims, Ezra (Rob Heaps) and Richard (Enlisted‘s Parker Young), track her down just as she eyes her next mark, Patrick (Being Mary Jane‘s Stephen Bishop).
My So Called Wife hails from Definitely, Maybe writer-director Adam Brooks and Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce star Paul Adelstein, who will exec produce. Universal Cable Productions will produce. The 10-episode first season will premiere in 2017.
This marks Bravo’s third scripted series, joining hourlong Girlfriend’s Guide and half-hour comedy Odd Mom Out. Both Bravo and E! have been venturing into scripted into recent years, with the latter having just ordered its second original series, The Arrangement.
The series’ green light is the first for Bravo under the new NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment unit led by exec vp scripted content Bill McGoldrick, following a major reorganization in February.
“Filled with intrigue and drama along with Bravo’s trademark wink and humor, this series is the perfect addition to the network’s slate as we continue our drive in the scripted arena,” NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment’s president of lifestyle networks Frances Berwick said Thursday in a statement. “This project builds upon the larger-than-life characters already populating Bravo in our scripted and unscripted fare, but is a world we could never do justice in reality, without the FBI subpoenaing us.”
Added NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment chief content officer and UCP president Jeff Wachtel: “As Bravo expands its scripted profile, we’re proud to bring to life a story that is humorous, smart and sexy — the perfect fit for Bravo’s discerning audience. This project has been a longtime labor of love for Dawn Olmstead, who brought it to us before joining our studio. We’re all excited to work with the brilliant Adam Brooks and Paul Adelstein.”
