They all leaned in eagerly, and Carrey said, “Where are you hiding Brian Williams? Where is he?”
Lauer and Guthrie laughed awkwardly, and Carrey’s interview companion Tina Fey could be seen rolling her eyes and saying, “Oh, boy.”
Lauer tried to move on by saying, “Look at the time.”
But Carrey wasn’t done.
“I just want to say something in his defense,” he continued. “If the helicopter in front of me gets hit, I’m taking the story.”
Williams was suspended by NBC News on Tuesday for six months after it emerged that he told a false account about a 2003 incident in Iraq.
Although he claimed the Chinook helicopter that he was riding in was hit by enemy fire, it emerged that he was in a helicopter that was an hour behind the one that got hit. The scandal has been fodder for comedians, and Jerry Seinfeld later alluded to Williams’ mistruths during the anniversary special, joking that he heard Williams was part of SNL‘s original cast in 1975.
