Peacock’s comedy Girls5eva, from Tina Fey, Robert Carlock and Meredith Scardino, has added a third star to its cast.
Busy Philipps will join Sara Bareilles and Renée Elise Goldsberry in the show, about the members of a 1990s girl group who try for another chance at pop stardom. The project is a bit of a reunion for Scardino, Fey and Philipps; the former two wrote and produced Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, on which Philipps guest-starred.
Grils5eva centers on a one-hit wonder girl group from the ’90s. When a young rapper samples their hit, the members of the group — now grown women balancing spouses, kids, jobs, debt, aging parents and shoulder pain — reunite to give their pop dreams one more shot.
Philipps will play Summer, the most bubbly but least talented member of the group. She is now a Real Housewives reject in yoga pants living in a New Jersey McMansion.
Philipps’ TV credits include E!’s late night show Busy Tonight, Cougar Town, Dawson’s Creek and Freaks and Geeks, among others. She hosts the podcast Busy Philipps Is Doing Her Best, and her memoir This Will Only Hurt a Little was a best-seller. She is repped by Carrie Byalick at B. Company, ICM Partners and attorney Cheryl Snow at Gang Tyre.
Scardino created Girls5eva, which comes from Universal Television. She will executive produce with Fey and Eric Gurian of Little Stranger, Carlock (via his Bevel Gears), Jeff Richmond and 3 Arts Entertainment’s David Miner. Kat Coiro (She-Hulk, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) will direct the first episode.
