Caitlyn Jenner‘s changing her tune on gay marriage.
In a new blog post titled “What I’ve Learned,” the 65-year-old addressed comments she’d made about gay marriage on The Ellen DeGeneres Show last week, when she said she didn’t “quite get” the idea of marriage between members of the same sex.
“Like many people,” Jenner writes in the post, “there was a time when I didn’t realize how important it is for gay couples to have the right to get married. But after hearing from my gay friends and learning more about the hardships they faced because of discrimination, it became clear to me that everyone should be able to marry the person they love.”
Jenner, who considers herself a Republican, was criticized for the way she phrased her support for gay marriage on Ellen, which some detractors viewed as reluctant.
“I mean, I like tradition and it’s always been between a man and a woman and I’m thinking I don’t quite get it,” Jenner said on the show. “But as time goes on, like a lot of people on this issue, I’ve really changed thinking here to, ‘I don’t ever want to stand in front of anybody’s happiness. That’s not my job. OK. If that word marriage is really, really that important to you I can go with it.’ “
There seemed to be tension on the set when DeGeneres, who is married to actress Portia de Rossi, responded that the former Olympian still did not seem “on board with it.”
DeGeneres spoke out about Jenner’s “confusing comments” that same day in a radio interview with Howard Stern.
“She still has a judgment about gay marriage,” DeGeneres told Stern. “And I said, ‘You’re wanting people to understand and accept you…and you still have a judgment about gay people and marriage.’ “
Jenner’s show I Am Cait ended its first season Sunday.
