Caitlyn Jenner’s journey is just getting started.
E! has renewed I Am Cait for a second season, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Season two will premiere in 2016.
After months of rumors that Jenner would headline her own reality series, I Am Cait formally was announced during the onetime Olympian’s sit-down interview with Diane Sawyer for 20/20. That conversation, which marked Jenner’s first public acknowledgment of her decision to transition, drew more than 20 million viewers and led to high anticipation for I Am Cait.
When the E! series ultimately premiered in July, it drew 3.9 million viewers and a 1.8 demo rating once three days of viewing were factored in. While it was a mere fraction of Jenner’s 20/20 audience, it nonetheless ranked as the network’s biggest new-series launch in more than a decade. By episode two, however, that viewership slid to 3.2 million.
I Am Cait drew the bulk of its praise for its sensitive handling of transgender issues — hardly a given, considering Jenner’s reality roots. Though the docuseries showcased many members of the larger-than-life Kardashian family, including Kim and Kris Jenner, each episode also featured educational and poignant moments. Among the latter: when Jenner visited the family of a transgender teen who recently had committed suicide in the very first episode.
“I’m looking forward to continuing the conversation,” said Jenner in a statement.
I Am Cait also has had an impressive global impact, too, airing in 153 countries and 24 languages.
“Caitlyn’s story has ignited a global conversation on the transgender community on a scale that has never been seen before,” said E! executive vp programming and development Jeff Olde. “We are honored Caitlyn has chosen to continue to share her ongoing evolution with our viewers around the world.”
Jenner exec produces I Am Cait along with Gil Goldschein, Jeff Jenkins, Farnaz Farjam, Andrea Metz and Melissa Bidwell for Bunim/Murray Productions.
Jenner is represented by CAA and Jeff Bernstein.
